About vodka cocktails
Vodka is one of the most versatile cocktail bases because its relatively neutral character allows other ingredients to take the lead. It works with citrus, fruit juices, coffee, cream, ginger beer and many other mixers, making vodka cocktails especially varied in style and flavor.
What mixes well with vodka?
Fruit juices are a natural match for vodka. Cranberry juice appears in several classics, including the Cosmopolitan, Sea Breeze and Bay Breeze. Orange, grapefruit and pineapple juice can take vodka cocktails in sweeter, brighter or more tropical directions.
Citrus is another common pairing. Lemon and lime bring freshness and acidity to drinks such as the Lemon Drop Martini and Moscow Mule. For richer drinks, coffee liqueur pairs vodka with deeper roasted flavors in the Black Russian, White Russian and Espresso Martini.
Vodka cocktail styles to explore
Vodka works across very different cocktail styles. For something light and fruit-forward, drinks such as the Sea Breeze and Bay Breeze combine vodka with fruit juices. The Moscow Mule takes a refreshing, spicy direction with ginger beer and lime.
At the richer end of the spectrum, the Espresso Martini combines vodka with espresso and coffee liqueur, while the White Russian adds cream. Savory cocktails are represented too: the Bloody Mary pairs vodka with tomato juice, seasonings and spice.
