About sour cocktails
Sour cocktails are built around a simple idea: balancing a base spirit with citrus and sweetness. Lemon or lime provides acidity, while sugar, syrup or a sweet liqueur balances the sharpness. This flexible structure appears across many different spirits and has produced some of the best-known cocktail families.
What makes a cocktail a sour?
The defining structure of a sour is the balance between spirit, citrus and sweetness. Lemon is used in classics such as the Whiskey Sour, Pisco Sour, Sidecar and Clover Club, while lime forms the citrus backbone of drinks such as the Daiquiri and Margarita.
The sweet component can take several forms. Simple syrup provides straightforward sweetness in drinks such as the Whiskey Sour and Daiquiri, while orange liqueur contributes both sweetness and citrus flavor to the Margarita, Sidecar and Cosmopolitan.
Sour cocktail styles to explore
Classic spirit-led sours show how easily the basic formula adapts to different bases. The Whiskey Sour uses whiskey and lemon, the Daiquiri combines rum with lime, and the Margarita brings tequila, lime and orange liqueur together.
Some sours add ingredients that change the texture or flavor without losing the underlying sweet-and-sour balance. Egg white gives the Pisco Sour and Clover Club a softer, foamy texture, while raspberry syrup gives the Clover Club its fruit character. The Amaretto Sour takes the category in a richer, almond-flavored direction.
