About non-alcoholic cocktails and mocktails

Non-alcoholic cocktails, often called mocktails, are mixed drinks made without alcoholic spirits or liqueurs. They can recreate the refreshing, balanced and layered character of a cocktail by combining ingredients such as fresh citrus, fruit juices, syrups, herbs, spices and carbonated mixers. Some are alcohol-free versions of familiar classics, while others are designed from the start as standalone non-alcoholic drinks.

What mixes well in non-alcoholic cocktails?

Fresh citrus and fruit juices are useful foundations for non-alcoholic cocktails because they provide acidity, sweetness and flavor without alcohol. Lime and lemon can add brightness, while pineapple, orange, cranberry and grapefruit juices can create fruitier or more tropical styles.

Carbonated mixers such as soda water and ginger beer can add length, freshness and texture. Herbs such as mint, flavored syrups and small amounts of ingredients such as grenadine can then be used to build aroma, sweetness and complexity while keeping the drink balanced.

Non-alcoholic cocktail styles to explore

Alcohol-free versions of classic cocktails are an easy place to start. Drinks such as the Virgin Mojito, Virgin Piña Colada and Virgin Mary keep recognizable elements of their alcoholic counterparts while leaving out the alcohol.

Other mocktails have their own identity. The Shirley Temple, Arnold Palmer, Roy Rogers and Cinderella show how fruit, soft drinks, tea and syrups can create varied non-alcoholic drinks without simply copying a traditional cocktail.
