About the Boulevardier
The Boulevardier is a whiskey-based relative of the Negroni, combining bourbon with Campari and sweet vermouth. Replacing gin with whiskey gives the drink a richer and warmer foundation while retaining the bittersweet structure of the original. Campari contributes pronounced bitter citrus and herbal notes, and sweet vermouth adds richness, sweetness and spice. The result is a sophisticated, spirit-forward cocktail with a deeper and rounder profile than a classic Negroni.
What does a Boulevardier taste like?
A Boulevardier tastes rich, bittersweet and warming. Bourbon contributes oak, vanilla and caramel-like notes, Campari adds pronounced bitter citrus and herbs, and sweet vermouth provides sweetness and spice. The result is deep, complex and more rounded than a gin-based Negroni.
Tips for making a Boulevardier
Stir the bourbon, Campari and sweet vermouth with plenty of ice until properly chilled and diluted. Keep opened sweet vermouth refrigerated to preserve its flavor. Strain over a large fresh cube and express an orange peel over the drink to complement Campari's bitter citrus character.
