About gin cocktails
Gin brings distinctive botanical flavors to cocktails, commonly combining well with citrus, vermouth and sparkling ingredients. Depending on the recipe, a gin cocktail can be crisp and refreshing, aromatic and complex, or strong and spirit-forward.
What mixes well with gin?
Citrus is especially prominent in gin cocktails. Lemon juice brings brightness and acidity to classics such as the Tom Collins, Gin Fizz, French 75 and Clover Club. Simple syrup is often used alongside the citrus to balance the drink.
Gin also pairs well with ingredients that emphasize its more aromatic and complex side. Dry vermouth creates the clean, spirit-forward Dry Martini, while sweet vermouth and Campari give the Negroni its bittersweet character. Champagne adds a sparkling finish to the French 75.
Gin cocktail styles to explore
For refreshing gin drinks, the Tom Collins and Gin Fizz combine gin with lemon, sweetness and soda water. The French 75 keeps the citrus character but adds Champagne for a drier, sparkling style.
Spirit-forward gin cocktails offer a very different experience. The Dry Martini is built around gin and dry vermouth, while the Negroni combines gin with Campari and sweet vermouth. More aromatic recipes such as the Aviation introduce floral and cherry notes.
