About the El Presidente
El Presidente is an elegant Cuban cocktail that became especially prominent during the early twentieth century. Combining white rum with dry vermouth, orange curaçao and a small amount of grenadine, it belongs to the family of stirred, spirit-forward cocktails. Its restrained fruitiness and sweetness allow the rum and fortified wine to remain prominent.
What does an El Presidente taste like?
El Presidente tastes smooth, dry and gently fruity. White rum provides a clean base, dry vermouth contributes herbal and wine-like complexity, and orange curaçao adds citrus sweetness. A small amount of grenadine rounds the drink with subtle fruit and sweetness without dominating it.
Tips for making an El Presidente
Use grenadine sparingly because too much will make the drink excessively sweet and mask the vermouth. Stir thoroughly with ice until properly chilled and diluted, then strain into a chilled coupe. A good orange curaçao will add considerably more complexity than a strongly sweet generic orange liqueur.
